When entering Firebaugh from the
East on, you cross over the San Joaquin River. You
know you are coming into some place very special
by the unique greeting you get from the gracefully
arched bridge lined with a parade of 19th Century
style lamps. Few California cities have such a
striking gateway. |
Incorporated
in 1914, Firebaugh has grown from a "sheep
shearing station and ferry crossing," to a
small agriculture based city with a population of
5,742. Before the railroad, the San Joaquin River
was the major thoroughfare to upstream
communities. The ferry was the major crossing for
prospectors heading for gold country.
Ferries
were the only way to cross the river until the
late 1800's when the first bridges were built. The
San Joaquin River played a major role in the
settling of the valley and Firebaugh is one of the
oldest historical towns on the Westside.
